Charisma Magazine on Todd Bentley

This is not an occasion to covertly rejoice over the impending breakup of Bentley’s marriage. No one should take joy in that, nor is it relevant to the fact that Bentley’s “faith” “healing” is the sort of Enthusiasm our fathers warned us about. What it is is Pentecostalism taking a hard look at itself and its “gullibility” (J. Lee Grady’s word, not mine). Here’s Grady’s editorial.

Why did so many people flock to Lakeland from around the world to rally behind an evangelist who had serious credibility issues from the beginning?
To put it bluntly, we’re just plain gullible.
From the first week of the Lakeland revival, many discerning Christians raised questions about Bentley’s beliefs and practices. They felt uneasy when he said he talked to an angel in his hotel room. They sensed something amiss when he wore a T-shirt with a skeleton on it. They wondered why a man of God would cover himself with tattoos. They were horrified when they heard him describe how he tackled a man and knocked his tooth out during prayer.
But among those who jumped on the Lakeland bandwagon, discernment was discouraged. They were expected to swallow and follow. The message was clear: “This is God. Don’t question.” So before we could all say, “Sheeka Boomba” (as Bentley often prayed from his pulpit), many people went home, prayed for people and shoved them to the floor with reckless abandon, Bentley-style.
I blame this lack of discernment, partly, on raw zeal for God. We’re spiritually hungry—which can be a good thing. But sometimes, hungry people will eat anything.
Many of us would rather watch a noisy demonstration of miracles, signs and wonders than have a quiet Bible study. Yet we are faced today with the sad reality that our untempered zeal is a sign of immaturity. Our adolescent craving for the wild and crazy makes us do stupid things. It’s way past time for us to grow up.
Is Grady’s complaint about Pentecostals inevitable in light of the constant searching for a “new” manifestation of the Spirit? (It’s not quite a rhetorical question…)

  1. King David’s wife did not support him fully, Job’s wife as welll but so have the unsupportive wives of many other faithful Christian persons including John Bunyan now too. For that matter neither did Jesus own family now too.

Mark 3:33 And He replied, Who are My mother and My brothers? 34 And looking around on those who sat in a circle about Him, He said, See! Here are My mother and My brothers; 35 For whoever does the things God wills is My brother and sister and mother!

  2. Wow…I don’t support Todd Bentley at all and think he’s a fake but that article is really insulting toward those that don’t march in lock step with the “image” of Christianity. Someone who has tattoos is automatically someone God wouldn’t use? If you wear a T-shirt with a skeleton on it you’re committing a sin?

When did Charisma magazine decide they can set the standard on what a Christian is supposed to look like and wear?

If God wants to use a tattooed guy in a skeleton T-shirt to spread His message then who are we to say it can’t be done?

  3. As a mature , honest, decent adult senior, I like to speak from my real insights, experiences and not as a pretender on the net.

When I told my in-laws, and family I was thinking of becoming a pastor all hell really broke loose from them, even from my wife and they were even professing Christians now too.. their basic opposition was that was not the lifestyle I had wanted for myself.. they had rather wanted riches, security .. and I knew the devil himself was behind the opposition

Like I said one of the greatest Christian author’s in the world, second to the Bible its seems, John Bunyan the preacher, author of Pilgrim’s progress his own wife did not go along with him

Still what disturbs me that too often the basher seem to imply often on the net that only Pentecostals pastors sin .. not the gay Anglicans, gay catholic’s, gay evangelicals or whatever?

But hey any of you do not have to tell me that 70 percent of all evangelical pastors commit adultery, not just Baker or Swaggart, so if the leaders do that what do you think the flock is like next?

Yes even God’s beloved King David committed murder and adultery and next was for given for it too.. because he had repented of it it is so easy to be a false, uncompassionate critic.. walk in someone else’s shoes for a start.. after all we all do sin.

King David’s wife did not support him fully, Job’s wife as well but so have the unsupportive wives of many other faithful Christian persons including John Bunyan now too. For that matter neither did Jesus own family now too.

Mark 3:33 And He replied, Who are My mother and My brothers? 34 And looking around on those who sat in a circle about Him, He said, See! Here are My mother and My brothers; 35 For whoever does the things God wills is My brother and sister and mother!

ever wonder why the supposed professing British Christians seem to hate the American Pentecostals so much now? jealously or what

  4. My twin Brother stands up and fights against all the crooked Pentecostal, evangelical pastors and so now he is being sued for 50 million dollars for his rather still ungodly war for there are 3 things still wrong in all of this..
1: the clear lack of love firstly in all of this,
2: the clear lack of praying for the crooked pastors firstly..
3: and the need to remove the beam from one own eyes before we can help the others still too..

I have no hidden agendas, I am not trying to get you to buy anything, I offer everything free, absolutely no money is asked for. There there is no church to join now as well, I merely try to tell the whole honest truth, positive and negative ones, even about politics, religion or what ever.

  5. Oh, come on Lee. You are an intelligent person so I know that you know that people run to these things because the local church pastors just aren’t delivering to their own people. Maybe if they brought their ego level down a few notches.
People are hungry for something more…shame on you Senior Pastors who care more about the “show” in their own churches than reaching out to the poor and widowed. You spend thousands of dollars on sound equipment and 100’s of thousands (or millions) on your bldg. projects yet your people are starving, even a christian magazine owner wants a legacy of himself at ORU after he dies…How sad it all is.
