The Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel: Thesis VII

“In the third place, the Word of God is not rightly divided when the Gospel is preached first and then the Law; sanctification first and then justification; faith first and then repentance; good works first and then grace” (C.F.W Walther, The Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel reproduced from the German edition of 1897 by W.H.T. Dau (St. Louis: Concordia, 1986), 2).

  1. This is a quote that our modern churches need to understand. My last pastor lamented the lack of repentence in people coming forward for salvation. Yet he eschews the use of the law, saying “You can’t condemn people to Christ.”

There’s a disconnect somewhere. Preachers have faith in the God Loves You And Has A Wonderful Plan For Your Life gospel, despite it’s utter absence of use by Christ and the apostles.
