A Bumpersticker Observed

Recently seen in the parking lot of a Baptist(!) hospital:
“If you can’t find Jesus, look for his mother”

To my mind, the worst kind of Roman piety.

  1. Worst? That is a strong word. And there is some fierce competition in the side-shows under the papal bigtop. But most common wouldn’t be “If you can’t find Jesus, look for his mother,” it’d be: “If you can’t find Jesus, so what? Pick another god.”

  2. Although they’d certainly find the former less crass than the latter (and pithy enough to fit on a bumper sticker).
As far as the sideshows under the big top: the things I find worse than that sticker would probably not fit under the heading of “piety.” Certainly, universalism and its various permutations are worse, but I’m not sure that pious Roman Catholics of the type I’m thinking of would see that as good either.
